Moshi Meeting Sets Tone for Scrutiny of Regional EAC Seed and Plant Varieties Bill

Description

The East African Community (EAC) Secretariat convened members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Committee on Agriculture, Tourism and Natural Resources in Moshi, Tanzania, for a three-day workshop on the proposed EAC Seed and Plant Varieties Bill, 2025.

The workshop focused on strengthening legislators' understanding of the proposed regional law, which aims to harmonize seed regulations across EAC Partner States, facilitate cross-border trade in quality seeds, protect indigenous seed varieties, and promote climate-resilient agriculture.

Participants also reviewed progress on implementing the Kampala CAADP Declaration (2025–2035) and the newly adopted EAC Regional Agriculture and Food Systems Investment Plan (RASIP). Discussions emphasized the importance of youth participation in agrifood systems through the EAC Youth in Agrifood Systems (EAYASE) Platform, alongside increased investment in digital agriculture, innovation, and climate-smart technologies.

This resource provides insights into the legislative process shaping East Africa's seed systems and highlights the region's commitment to sustainable agriculture, food security, and youth-led agribusiness development.
